A Caesar!

It certainly is the time for offspring to pop out, but for us it didn't seem as easy as what is naturally intended. Well, that could be a little misleading...

One of Squiz's cows was having trouble calving as the head of the calf was twisted backward and the delivery wouldn't progress. So, to cut a long and torturous story short, "Misty Fawn" was assessed and had to have a caesarian section. A very quick procedure after having an epiural and a couple of locals - she stood the whole way through it... (tips just in case). Calf came out alive and all seemed well. During the stitching up the skies opened (typical timing for the drought we are enduring) and the poor little calf got cold and Misty couldn't lick her up till she was stitched up.... despite advise to not move the calf, we deicided it was time as she was freezing and surely she was better out of the rain. Calf moved, cow together, still raining and cow now not accepting calf... wasn't looking good. Eventually the cow acknowledged the calf and started to clean her up, but by this time the calf was so cold and had such little energy that she couldn't get up or suckle. We moved the calf into the shed and left them to bond. Later, we called the vet as the calf hadn't moved or eaten. She was tube fed, we blow dried her to get her warmer and put a hot water bottle between her legs to get her body temperature up. She was so weak. More overnight feeds and hot water bottles, but by 9am she had died. It was very sad, and I think avoidable.... We all feel really sad about the whole affair. Misty Fawn is doing well it seems both physically and emotionally.

I promise you that what ever way Squurt comes out, I will accept him/her but will not be licking the gunk off. Still pregnant, but we are due tomorrow, so give us a couple of weeks and the little munchkin should present itself to the world. All feeling good, but super keen to meet our little human. Note to self: Must think of some names!!!!!
